How to choose a study abroad consultant in India: questions to ask

Choosing who to take advice from is one of the biggest decisions in a move abroad. Here are questions worth putting to any consultant, including us.

Ask how the consultant is paid

Consultants can be paid in different ways: by students, by universities or institutions, or by a mix. None of these is automatically right or wrong, but it affects whose interests the advice is shaped by. Ask directly, and ask for the answer in writing.

Ask what is and isn't included

  • What exactly will the consultant do, and what will you have to do yourself?
  • Is there a fee at any stage, and what does it cover?
  • What happens if you change your mind, or if plans fall through?

Be careful with guarantees

Admissions, visas and job offers are decided by universities, governments and employers. No consultant can truthfully guarantee them. Treat anyone who does with caution.

Ask about licences and what they are allowed to do

Rules differ by country about who may give immigration advice or place workers abroad. Ask whether the consultant is authorised for what they offer, and what they refer elsewhere. Launchpad currently provides guidance only and says so on every page.

Check that the advice is about you

Good advice starts with your situation. Be wary of a standard list of universities or countries offered before anyone has asked about your goals, budget or background.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a consultant at all?
Some people manage entirely on their own using official sources. A consultant can help if you want someone to talk through options and trade-offs. Either way, verify important facts with the official source.
What is a good question to ask Launchpad?
Ask anything on this page - how Launchpad is paid, what it does and doesn't do, and what it won't promise. A Launchpad consultant will answer plainly in your free intake conversation.

Talk it through with a Launchpad consultant

Free intake conversation for students and job seekers. A consultant calls you directly to talk through where you should go, based on recent visa rules and the wider world situation.

Launchpad provides guidance only. It is not a law firm, a licensed immigration consultancy or a licensed overseas-recruitment agency, and it does not provide legal immigration advice, represent applicants before immigration authorities, or guarantee admission, a visa or a job. Rules and conditions change often - always confirm current requirements with the official government source for your destination.
